How to Export Files for DTF Printing
Short answer: DTF files need three things your RIP can read: 300 DPI PNG or TIFF, a separated white underbase channel, and proper alpha. This guide walks through exporting DTF files from Patch It Up Pro that drop directly into Cadlink, Kothari, AcroRIP, or any OEM DTF RIP software.
Step-by-step
Open your design in the Canvas Builder
Load individual designs or a full gang sheet. The DTF export profile applies to both single-file and sheet exports.
Verify 300 DPI resolution
Check the design dimensions in the inspector. For DTF, actual print size should output at 300 DPI. A 3-inch design needs to be 900 pixels wide minimum. The export dialog flags any design that would output below 300 DPI.
Enable white underbase separation
In the export dialog, toggle 'Separate white channel' on. The exporter builds the white underbase from the alpha channel so any transparent area stays clear on the final transfer and any colored area gets its white base.
Choose your export format
PNG with alpha is the industry standard for DTF RIP software. TIFF with spot channel is required for some professional RIPs that prefer layered format. Both options are in the export dialog.
Export and check the file
Download the PNG or TIFF. Open it in an image viewer to verify the alpha works (transparent background shows through) and the colors are accurate. The exporter also generates a preview showing the white underbase if you want to confirm separation.
Load into your DTF RIP
Drop the file into Cadlink, Kothari, AcroRIP, or your OEM RIP software. The RIP reads the spot white channel automatically and applies the correct ink order (CMYK then white). Print and press.

- Do I need a specific RIP software to use Patch It Up Pro exports?
- No. The exports are standard format PNG and TIFF with alpha and spot white. Any modern DTF RIP software reads them directly. Cadlink Digital Factory, Kothari Print-Pro, AcroRIP, EKPrint, and most OEM RIPs all work without configuration changes.
- What DPI should I use for DTF?
- 300 DPI is the standard for DTF production. Higher DPI does not improve results because DTF ink droplet resolution tops out there. Lower DPI produces visible pixelation on the final transfer. Patch It Up Pro flags any design below 300 DPI before export.
- Can I export UV DTF files the same way?
- Yes, with one difference. Switch the export profile to UV DTF in the dialog and the output adjusts color space and includes the laminated-transfer preview. The rest of the workflow is identical.
